Brief Bio
Bart Jansen obtained a PhD in Computer Science in 2005 with research in artificial intelligence and developmental robotics. Since 2006 he is working at the Department of Electronics and Informatics of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, on a variety of applications in e-health. In 2016 he became a professor, with teaching duties in computer science related courses in the engineering faculty. His current research interest is in the development of neuroevolutionary algorithms for pattern recognition and in the development of computer games for physical rehabilitation. He is active in a variety of research projects and co-leading a team of 20 researchers.
Athanassios Skodras

Brief Bio
Athanassios Skodras is the Professor of Digital Systems of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras, Greece, since March 2013. He holds a Physics degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1980), a Computer Engineering & Informatics degree and a Ph.D. degree in Electronics from the University of Patras, Greece (1986). His research interests include Gesture Recognition Based on sEMG Signals and Deep Learning, Discrimination of Photos from Computer Graphics Images, ENF-based Authentication of Digital Media, Satellite Image Registration, Image and Video Coding, HDR Image Compression, NIR Finger Vein Authentication, digital watermarking, fast transform algorithms (theory and implementation). He has over 160 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings, authored or co-authored 6 books, 3 book chapters, and holds 2 international patents filed by Ericsson, Sweden. He has served as a TC member of the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, the Pattern Recognition and Associate/Area Editor for the Springer Journal of Real-Time Image Processing, the Elsevier Signal Processing Image communication and the EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, and as a reviewer for numerous journals and conferences. Currently, he is the Chair of the IAPR Greek Association of Image Processing and Digital Media. He is on the Steering Committee of the International Conferences of DSP and the International Conference on QoMEX. Professor Skodras is a Chartered Engineer, Senior Member of the IEEE, and member of the EURASIP and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Jan Paul Paul Cornelis

Brief Bio
Jan Cornelis is Emeritus Professor with part time research appointment at VUB, since 2016. He studied electromechanical engineering and obtained a PhD in the field of biomedical engineering. He coordinated the IRIS research group on computer vision and image processing. His current interests are in the fields of satellite data analysis for weather forecasting and climate studies and in data driven approaches in the field of biomedical engineering. He has been HoD Electronics and Informatics (ETRO), Vicerector R&D, coordinator Technology Transfer and Vicerector International Policy at VUB, Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Innovation, Co-founder of the BI3 and Qbic incubation funds, board member at IMEC and VIB. He is consultant professor at NPU-Xi’an and visiting professor at UO-Cuba.

SCOPE

In recent years, the decoding of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals produced by skeletal muscles during the execution of hand gestures has found many applications in human-machine interface, myoelectric control, rehabilitation, and other domains. The availability and diversity of sEMG have encouraged advancements in processing and data analysis algorithms paving the way for the development of more complex applications. This also includes fusion with other data types for gesture recognition. This special session aims to communicate novel ideas and new theoretical frameworks or algorithms, that are close to real-life applications. It should provide the opportunity for researchers from academia and industry to present their latest work, share ideas and strengthen contacts within this mixed “EMG/Data processing” and “University/Industry” R&D community.
