Jane Katusiime

Brief Bio
Jane Katusiime has a bachelor’s in computer science from Mbarara University of Science and Technology-Uganda and a master’s in computer science from Malmo University-Sweden. She is currently completing her PhD in the department of Computer Science at Humboldt University of Berlin. Her research is about access control models for healthcare systems especially for low literacy and low resource settings. She is passionate about implementing health interventions for maternal healthcare. Her master´s thesis was titled “Reducing Maternal Mortality in Uganda and Tanzania Using Mobile Phones” and it was sponsored by the Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions (SPIDER). At the moment, she is a co-investigator on the MatHealth project whose aim is to support maternal healthcare through implementation of a multimedia-based intervention for pregnant illiterate women in rural Southwestern Uganda. The project is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). she is also a member of CAMTech (Consortium for Affordable Medical Technologies), a global consortium of academic, clinical, corporate and implementation partners working to co-create, test and deploy innovative, high quality and affordable health technologies to improve health outcomes in the poorest regions of the world.
Angella Musiimenta

Brief Bio
Dr. Angella Musiimenta holds a PhD in Information Systems (majoring in health informatics) from the University of Manchester UK (2007-2011), an MSc in Information Systems from the University of Leeds UK (2004). She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda. She is currently a senior lecturer at MUST and a founding coordinator of a master’s in health informatics. In 2013, she established a MUST-MIT (Mbarara University of Science and Technology-Massachusetts Institute of Technology) collaboration for an online course in Global Health Informatics at MIT. This is an on-going collaboration which has benefited over 100 students and faculty at MUST and has resulted into the development of funded pilot health informatics projects for improving healthcare. She has also coordinated educational projects including those funded by Google USA, and DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Programme). Her long-term goal is to improve the health of people in low resource settings using technology-assisted interventions. Towards this goal, since 2012, in collaboration with researchers from Harvard Medical School, she has been an investigator in various health informatics projects. In 2016, she emerged the first Ugandan to win a prestigious NIH-funded K43 Global Leader award aimed at using mobile technologies to improve tuberculosis medication adherence. She is also a PI under the MatHealth project which is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and aims at implementing a multimedia based mobile intervention for illiterate pregnant women.
Niels Pinkwart

Niels Pinkwart completed his PhD studies in 2005 at the University of Duisburg-Essen with a dissertation on collaborative educational modeling systems. After a post-doctoral position at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (2005/2006), he accepted offers for Assistant Professor and Associate Professor positions at Clausthal University of Technology. In 2013, he moved to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin where he heads the research group "Computer Science Education / Computer Science and Society", the ProMINT Kolleg and the center of technology enhanced learning located in the Professional School of Education of HU Berlin. In addition to his activities at HU Berlin, Prof. Pinkwart acts as Principal Investigator at the Einstein Center Digital Future and at the Weizenbaum Institute for the networked society (German Internet Institute). Within the German Computer Science Association, Prof. Pinkwart is currently co-chair of the working group on Learning Analytics and member of the steering committee of the section on educational technologies. Prof. Pinkwart and his team investigate the design of digital media and technologies to support human learning, co-operation, communication, and social interaction. This includes conceptual design, software architectures, user interfaces, and intelligent support mechanisms for interactive and collaborative systems - and (last not least) the empirical evaluation of the usage of these systems by humans in their work, learning or leisure context. In our research, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach which in rooted in computer science, but also includes methods from cognitive, social and learning sciences.
Lisa Butler

Lisa Butler has a B.A in Psychology from Smith College, an M.A. and a PhD in Education/Psychological Studies in Human Development, an M.P.H. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics & Health and Social Behavior, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from U California, Los Angeles. She is an epidemiologist and behavioral scientist with research interests in child and adolescent HIV prevention, care and treatment. She has education and training in applied developmental psychology and population health sciences, and over 17 years’ experience with epidemiologic research in clinic and community settings in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana. She specializes in the design and implementation of innovative clinic- and community-based strategies that incorporate participatory methods, mobile health (mHealth) technologies and multi-media resources to engage communities, health care providers, children, adolescents, and their families to improve infant and child health outcomes in the context of low-resource, high HIV-prevalence settings. As an InCHIP Affiliate, she plans to work on projects focused on child nutrition and development, adolescent HIV prevention and treatment, and maternal mental health and care giving practices. She has previously worked with InCHIP faculty and affiliated students under her ongoing NIH-funded study of a problem-focused cognitive behavioral intervention to support pediatric HIV disclosure.


Mobile technologies for maternal health workshop will provide a platform for researchers, designers, health practitioners and policy makers from the health sector, academia, industry and government to discuss innovative ways of using mobile technologies to support maternal health care. The workshop will span a wide range of practical and theoretical concepts that will cover design perspectives, privacy, security and usability concerns of mobile interventions; digital divide and gender dynamics in utilization of mobile technologies; new mobile technologies such as wearable devices and mobile sensors; policy and regulation of mobile health systems and impact assessment of mobile systems in maternal health care.
