24 - 26 February, 2020 - Valletta, Malta

Within the 13th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies - BIOSTEC 2020

CO-CHAIRS

Therese Malliavin
CNRS and Institut Pasteur
France

Brief Bio
Therese Malliavin received her PhD from Universite Paris-Sud in 1992, and became CNRS research fellow since 1993. She received her habilitation in 2000, and is senior research fellow since 2015. Since 2006, she is member of the Structural Bioinformatics Unit, at the Structural Biology and Chemistry Departement at Institut Pasteur, in Paris (France). She is working from on one side, on the molecular modeling of toxins from pathogens, and, on the other side, on the developments of in silico methods for determining protein structure. She is particularly interested by the link between biomolecular plasticity and the molecular interactions.
Carlile Lavor
Applied Math, University of Campinas
Brazil

Brief Bio
Carlile Lavor graduated in Mathematics from the University of Campinas, in 1996, and received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 2001. He was Visiting Professor in distinguished institutions like École Polytechnique (2008-2009), Duke University (2013-2014), and Princeton University (2018). Since 2015, he is a Full Professor at the University of Campinas. His research efforts to Distance Geometry, in the last 15 years, culminated with the publication of a paper (co-authored by Liberti, Maculan, and Mucherino) in SIAM Review (first issue in 2014), which was awarded the Notable Article Prize from the ACM Computing Reviews in 2015. He is co-author of the books "Euclidean Distance Geometry" and "A Geometric Algebra Invitation to Space-Time Physics, Robotics and Molecular Geometry", both by Springer. Carlile Lavor is the current President of the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics.
Antonio Mucherino
IRISA, University of Rennes 1
France
https://www.antoniomucherino.it/

Brief Bio
Antonio Mucherino received his PhD in Computational Biology from the Second University of Naples in 2005. After a postdoctoral period at University of Florida, as well as another one in France when he collaborated with the Ecole Polytechnique of Palaiseau, INRIA Lille and CERFACS Toulouse, he's assistant professor (Maitre de Conferences) at University of Rennes 1 since 2011. In 2018, he received his "habilitation diriger les recherchers" (HDR) with a monograph entitled "Distance Geometry: Theory, Algorithms and Applications". Distance Geometry (DG) is Antonio Mucherino's main research topic, which is strongly multidisciplinary, because it brings together researchers in mathematics, computer science, biology, physics, etc.

SCOPE

Numerous biophysical approaches, as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) among others, provide information on inter-atomic distances and angles in biomolecular conformations. These parameters often display errors and artifacts as biomolecules undergo conformational transitions which are difficult to put in evidence experimentally. Indeed, most of the biophysical experimental techniques only gain sufficient sensitivity by time and/or space signal averaging. The Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) provides a framework to study such aspects. Moreover, the DGP strongly relies on global optimisation and graph rigidity theory. The session intends to gather presentations focused on the application of distance geometry approaches to structural bioinformatics problems, and on on the development of solution methods for the distance geometry problem.
