Abstract: The number of aged population is growing consistently, and is expected to triple by few next decades. One of the most threatening risk aged population have to face in their daily life is falling. Falling can pose serious injuries and consequences to elderly people, especially when they live alone or have cognitive dysfunction. If the elderly lives alone when an accident happens, it is more likely to take a long time until someone notices and provides rescue. Moreover, if the elderly has cognitive disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease, it is possible that he or she will not try to seek help. In this paper, an online platform called WECARE is proposed. WECARE aims to minimize the consequence of delayed rescue after a fall accident. The main advantage of the platform is the integration of community volunteers into the already widespread technologies such as fall detection systems and automatic doors. The benefits of volunteers could be a faster response after a fall accident and social connection provided to elderly people, especially the ones who live alone. This paper also describes how the idea was originated, modified, and improved through methodology. It also discusses advantages of the platform, limitations, as well as its future.

Intrauterine HIFU: A New Treatment for Uterine Fibroids

Authors:

Marie-Caroline Faisant, Benzion Amoyav, Quentin Perrier, Laura Eling and Jayashree Rangaraja

Abstract: Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumours among women of child- bearing age with a prevalence varying from 5.4% to 77%. The most common symptoms of uterine fibroids include: heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain and infertility. Symptoms can be influenced by the location, size and number of fibroids. Fibroids are most often identified during a routine pelvic examination by a physician. Treatments may include temporary medical treatments, surgery or uterine artery embolization. As all of the methods above have considerable disadvantages, we propose a medical device using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in a minimally procedure in which an ultrasound probe is inserted into the uterus to precisely ablate the fibroid and shrink it. Our new medical device proposal is aimed at improving clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction.

Empowering Translation of New Ideas - A EIT Health ClinMed Summer School Overview

Authors:

Sofia Ribeiro, Mariachiara Ricci, Albert Von Der Lieth, Yves Bayon, Dimitrios I. Zeugolis, Sylvia Pelayo, Isabelle Marque and Lionel Pazart

Abstract: Translational research training is crucial to convert academic research ideas into efficient real-life solutions. In this paper a summer school supported by EIT Health is presented. Its main goal is to integrate clinical knowledge in the development of new medical devices, from ideas to post-market approval, in the clinics. Students were immersed in clinical centres where they had close contacts and engaged discussions with clinicians and patients to identify and assimilate clinical unmet needs. From this immersive stage resulted innovative solutions that were further investigated with the support of plenary lectures and by interaction with experts of the medical field, from clinicians to Medtech company representatives. This experience proved to have a positive impact on the student’s understanding of the clinical development life cycle from research findings or new ideas into medical devices.

Concept Design of a New Portable Medical Device for Lymphedema Monitoring: A EIT Health ClinMed Summer School Project

Authors:

Abstract: Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition derived from impaired lymphatic system function. Lymphedema is incurable, progressive, disfiguring, disabling and has adverse psychosocial effects. Upper extremity lymphedema is mainly the consequence of breast cancer surgery. Several methods to diagnose lymphedema exist; however, these diagnoses are performed once the disease is already close to an advanced, irreversible stage. There is a need to monitor patients at risk with an efficient device. To solve this unmet need, we propose a portable home-monitoring device for early diagnosis of lymphedema. This paper explores all the aspects of the development of a new medical device, such as the assessment of the clinical need and the state of the art, the specifications for the solution, the definition of the broad outlines of the development plan and some considerations about the usability, the risk analysis, the market and the competitors.

Organizing Medtech Innovation with Concept Maturity Levels

Authors:

Mathias Béjean and Eliziane Siqueira

Abstract: This paper presents an integrative approach to the maturation of concepts in the field of Medtech Innovation by using Concept Maturity Levels (CMLs). CMLs have been introduced by JPL (NASA-Caltech) during the last decade to cope with the early phases of space mission concept development. Extending well-known TRLs, their strength is to evolve an innovative concept guided by an incremental set of assessment needs. The article draws on an on-going research led in France where CMLs are being tested as a methodology for structuring Medtech Innovation complexity. Exploratory results provide an emerging framework showing what could be CMLs for Medtech Innovation. They also provide insights of why and how they could be implemented as a solid basis to stimulate more formative and adaptive design and evaluation methods.

ATP: Aqua Therapy for Patients, a New Approach for Water Rehabilitation Follow-up with Connected Devices Linked with a Serious Game

Authors:

B. Martins, A. Amiens, C. Adamo, M. Ascoet and F. Barbot

Abstract: Rehabilitation is a public health issue that addresses the societal and economic problem of loss of autonomy. Following a rehabilitation program may require an effort of movement and consistency for people with motor difficulties who sometimes lack interest in this physiotherapy period that is difficult to concentrate on. Thus, the ATP project proposes to improve the use of lower limb water rehabilitation by proposing a device combining the use of sensors for direct biofeedback and serious game aspects to increase patient motivation. The equipment will facilitate real-time monitoring and learning of rehabilitation. In addition, the device will allow the physiotherapist, through information management and processing software, to program personalized movement sequences based on each patient's pathology and monitor their progress throughout the rehabilitation session and throughout the entire program. At each stage, the needs of professionals and patients will be taken into account to ensure the success of rehabilitation processes.

H-Links: Supporting Physicians with Objective Pain Monitoring for the Comfort of Patients at Homes

Authors:

Safae Moustakim, De J. Julien, Anna Holubová, Aditi Shenoy, Daniela Carsch and Jacques Battaglia

Abstract: The following study focus on pain management during post-operative surgery treatment, it describes a solution for measuring the pain level for pediatric surgery patients at home since hospital care is trending towards ambulatory care. This solution can decrease the time in pain and optimize dosing of drug intake, and thus, improve the effectiveness of the treatment, reduce the time of post-surgery recovery and reduce the risk of chronic pain development. This can, in a global way, increase the overall quality of life of both patients and their family members. From the parent’s point of view, better acceptance of ambulatory surgery can be expected together with reduced stress caused by a fear of pain management at home. From the hospital’s point of view, we expect an increase in the rate of ambulatory surgery, and thus, an increase of beds availability.
